On the first day of training:
I. We will establish a group climate that will set the momentum for the remainder of the program.
- a. Introductions will begin the session. Going around the room each person will introduce and make a statement about themselves.
- b. Mapping Activity. How well do we know our country? Working together toward the completion of an activity can improve our geographic understanding and cooperation skills. The mapping activity will include each intern receiving a map of the United States of America. The maps will be blank, except for the outlines of each state. Interns (and mentors) are invited to try completing the map.
- 1. Which state is completely divided into two separate land masses by a body of water?
- 2. Can we name and identify all the Great Lakes?
- 3. Where was the Exxon Valdez oil spill? the on-going BP spill?
II. Workready - Portfolio Training. Now that a group learning atmosphere is established, we will review the program. Why is workready paying for them to participate in bITs? What is expected of a bITs Intern? What do the Interns expect from bITs?
a. Practice: fill out paper application.
III. Career Interest Survey. [Pages 5-6 of Exploration.pdf]
- a. Students are each given a 64 question survey to assess their interests and potential career paths.
- b. The survey then provides the students with a short description of the different fields and potential course work.
- 1. Individual student career goals are shared and discussed.
IV. How do we get these careers?
- a. Goal Plan - SMART GOALS (Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, Time-oriented)
- b. Interview - Dressing the part, talking the talk, and good behavior. What are "codes?" What verbal and non-verbal codes do we use?
